How it is made

Vinylize, one record at a time

  1. The record

    The record

Every frame starts with a real vinyl record. Its grooves stay visible in the finished frame, so each one carries a pattern of its own.

  2. Vinyl meets acetate

    Vinyl meets acetate

The record is laminated to hypoallergenic, plant-based Italian cellulose acetate. The vinyl gives the frame its surface; the acetate gives it strength and forms the inside of the frame and the temples.

  3. Shaped by hand

    Shaped by hand

The blocks are cut, the contour engraved, and each frame milled, filed and shaped by hand — more than 50 steps in all.

  4. Finished individually

    Finished individually

Every frame is polished, fitted with Italian hinges and checked by hand in our Budapest workshop before it reaches the showroom.

Questions we get in the showroom

What is Vinylize?

Vinylize is the eyewear brand Zack Tipton launched in Budapest in 2004. The first frame was carved by hand from a 12-inch Creedence Clearwater Revival record and held together with cigar-box hinges. Today Vinylize is sold around the world and still made by hand in Budapest.

Are the frames really made from vinyl records?

Yes. A real record is laminated to Italian cellulose acetate: the vinyl gives the frame its surface and grooves, the acetate its strength. The frames are robust and take any prescription lens.

Is every frame unique?

Yes. Every frame is made from real vinyl, so each one is unique in texture and pattern.

How much does a Vinylize frame cost?

Prices vary by model, and we don't list them online. Write to showroom@tipton.hu or call +36 1 786 1080 and we'll tell you the price of any frame — or come in and see them in person.

Do I need an appointment to try frames on?

No. Come in during opening hours and try on anything. You only need to book for an eye exam.

Can I get them with prescription lenses?

Yes. Every Vinylize frame is prescription-ready. We make Zeiss lenses, single vision or progressive, to the results of your eye exam.

How much is an eye exam, and how long does it take?

There are three levels, all on our own Zeiss equipment with our own optometrist: Basic 20,000 Ft (30 min), Deluxe 30,000 Ft (45 min) and Premium 45,000 Ft (60 min). Book a slot online.

Can I have the exam in English?

Yes. Our optometrists run the whole exam in English or Hungarian, at the same price. Your confirmation and your written prescription come in the language you choose.

Do I have to buy glasses if I book an exam?

No. The exam is a full diagnostic assessment and stands on its own, whether or not you buy glasses with us.

How long until my glasses are ready?

Most glasses are ready one to two weeks after you choose your frame and lenses. Some lenses take a little longer.

Is there a guarantee?

Yes. Every frame has a two-year guarantee, and we can often repair it too. People come back to us after eight years asking for the same frame.
