Gozaemon Masunaga began making spectacles in Fukui in 1905 and brought craftsmen from Osaka and Tokyo to teach the town the trade. Japan’s eyewear has come from there ever since.
Every frame goes through more than 200 separate production steps, and the ones that matter are still done by hand. Masunaga keeps the whole process in its own factory in Japan.
Pure titanium and beta-titanium for the fronts and the temples, hand-polished Japanese acetate, and precious metals where they earn their place. The frames stay light and hold their shape.
Masunaga’s own designs are restrained — thin lines, exact proportion, detail you notice only up close. The house has also worked with designers, among them Kenzo Takada.
